This square was originally part of a special stash-busting blanket I whipped up as a wedding gift for a friend. I dove into my stash of DK acrylic odds and ends (like a true yarn hoarder!) to create it—check out the picture below! I call it the ‘Colour Burst Flower Blanket’.

While this pattern uses 5 colours, the creative possibilities are endless. Go wild! Mix it up with as many (or as few) colours as you like. Maybe try solid-coloured squares to balance out the bursts of colour, or knot together those small yarn scraps for a completely random, one-of-a-kind look! Whatever you do, just make sure you’re having fun with it!

Brightly multi-coloured crochet granny square blanket wrapped over a sofa

Skill Level

Advanced beginner with photos showing most stages of the granny square.

Materials Needed

You can make this granny square using small quantities of any type of yarn. I made mine with acrylic DK but it would work in any weight and yarn type. Just be aware that any weight larger or smaller than DK will change the finished size of your square. The colours will be referred to as A-E.

Hook 4mm (US G/6) or size suited to achieve the finished size.

Tapestry Needle

Scissors

Tension

Not applicable for this pattern.

Finished Size

Approx. 18cm x 18cm (7in x 7in) after blocking.

Pattern Notes – please read these instructions before you start.

In some rounds / rows I have noted the stitch count per stitch type rather than total stitch count. For example: [4tr, 4htr, 4 ch3-sp]. As an alternative to a slip stitch into the 1st stitch at the end of each round, you could work an invisible join where applicable. This pattern suggests the use of standing stitches at the beginning of some rounds when starting a new colour. See the Special Stitches section to familiarise yourself before starting the pattern.

Special Stitches

2 treble crochet cluster(Yoh, insert into st and pull up a loop, yoh and pull through 2 loops) twice, yoh and pull through 3 loops.
front post double crochetInsert your hk front to back around the next st post inserting it to the right of the st and back out to the left, pull up a loop and finish your dc in the usual way.
popcorn stitchMake 5tr in the same st, unhook the last st and insert the hk into the 1st tr from front to back, then pick up the last tr loop from back to front and pull this through the 1st loop on the hk so you have 1 loop left
standing treble crochetMake a slip knot on your hk and yoh as you would start with a normal tr, hold both loops in place on the hk, insert hk into st and pull up a loop (3 loops on hk), yoh and carefully pull through 2 loops, yoh and pull through 2 loops. The slip knot will remain at the top of the st.
standing double crochetMake a slip knot on your hk, hold this in place on the hk and insert hk into the st, pull up a loop, yoh and pull through both loops as you would with a normal dc. The slip knot will remain at the top of the st.
invisible joinPull through the yarn and thread onto a tapestry needle. Thread under the ‘v’ of the next but one st and pull through yarn. Thread the needle back into the bl and 3rd loop of the last st to form a ‘v’. Secure and FO. This method creates a ‘fake’ st after the last st of the round. It has a neater finish and doesn’t affect the final st count.
double treble crochetYoh twice and insert into st, yoh and pull up a loop (4 loops on hk), yoh and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hk), yoh and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hk), yoh and pull through last 2 loops.
spike treble crochetYoh, insert hk into st and pull up a long loop to the same height as the previous st (3 loops on hk), yoh pull through 2 loops, yoh pull through 2 loops.
front post treble crochetYoh, take your hk front to back around the next st post inserting it to the right of the st and back out to the left, pull up a loop and finish your tr in the usual way. This way you are making the FPtr stand in front of the previous round st.
