As a crochet designer and creator, one of the biggest challenges I have is coming up with colour ideas for my crochet projects. What colours should I use for my next project? Do these colours work together? Are these the kind of questions you often ask yourself? Well I could have a solution for you so read on!

I recently visited the beautiful Wells-next-the-Sea in north Norfolk for some R&R. When I go on holiday, I’m always on the lookout for colours ideas for my crochet designs. Nature and the world around us offers so much for us creatives – we just need to see it and use it! I am particularly inspired by the large number of historical artefacts and places that the UK has to offer.

I wanted to talk about how a trip to Holkham Hall & Estate gave me some ideas for new colours to use in my future crochet.  Holkham Hall is full of the most sumptuous furnishings and textiles which are so detailed and colourful that I just had to snap a few pictures. I took two images which were full of rich colours perfect for any yarn craft and turned them into colour palettes as you can see below. The one on the left would be fab for a winter crochet sweater don’t you think? The one on the right could be perfect for a lovely striped crochet blanket maybe?

On the right is a picture of a dining room in a stately home with a richly decorated rug and other furnishings. On the left is a colour palette that matches the image of the dinning room.

I also found an amazing mosaic tiled table in one of the rooms which had these hexagonal patterns- these make the perfect crochet hexagons! I also love the earthy tones of this table but think how beautiful this would look in pastels or a very bright colour palette. There is so much inspiration all around us if we just look for it.

We all have phones full of pictures we’ve snapped while out and about or on holiday. Why not look through them and pick out some pictures that really jump out at you? What is it about the picture that you love? Is it the colours, the textures or the subject of the picture itself? For me, it is always colour that I am drawn to.

Whatever the reason for choosing your photos, make yourself a Pinterest board and pin these pictures as a reminder for when you’re starting a new crochet project. You’ll have instant access to colourful ideas for your crochet. You can even keep the board a secret!
